Welding

This course introduces the principles and practices of welding, with an emphasis on processes and hazards such as burns, dust, and noise. Course content will be specific to SMAW (stick) welding, with the potential to progress to GMAW (MIG) welding. Students will cover welding safety, care and use of tools and equipment, oxy-fuel safety and equipment, base metal preparation, and joint designs. Students will complete a welding project.

Course Objectives

1. learn safety procedures related to the use of SMAW and GMTAW welding and oxy-fuel cutting equipment
2. learn the types of welding and cutting equipment, as well as their care and use
3. be trained in base metal preparation and joint designs used in welding

Prerequisites

The candidate is required to pass an eye examination, with or without corrective lenses, to prove:
- Near-distance acuity such that the applicant is capable of reading a minimum of Jaeger Number 1 or equivalent type and size letters at a distance of not less than 12
inches on a standard Jaeger test chart.
- Reasonably measured gross stereopsis (depth perception)

Requirements for Successful Completion

90% attendance
Successful Completion of Welding Project,Successful Completion of written tests with a minimum grade of 70%,Successful Completion of hands on demonstrations of skills, including ethicing analysis of welds

Intended Audience

Participants who want to become welders, where they can find employment in fabrication shops, structural welding (buildings and bridges). In addition, participants can find employment as entry-level technicians in welding and metalworking industries. Career opportunities also exist in construction, manufacturing, fabrication, sales, quality control, supervision, and welding-related self-employment. Welders can also own their own businesses.
