Jalen Jackson: My Perspective

January 23, 2023 - March 3, 2023 Art Exhibition

Scott Northern Wake Campus, Building F, Library Lower Level

Event Description: Jalen Jackson is a visual artist whose paintings explore African American culture, memories, and experiences in his life. His paintings depict flashbacks of growing up as a son of a single mother and childhood memories, with the goal of creating a sense of nostalgia while giving a representation of Black soul for whomever interacts with his works. Jackson received his BFA in Visual Arts from NC A&T State University and is based in Durham, NC.

More Than Skin Deep: The Journey of Black Identity in the Workplace

Let's Talk Jazz

Event Description: This workshop works to dismantle the common misconception that jazz is just one basic sound. Led by director Brandon Mitchell, come enjoy a live performance and open discussion of tunes that are foundational to the genre. Students can engage learn a history of jazz music as well as time with the instrumentalist about their instrument expertise as well as their experiences and opportunities through music.

Black History Expo

Beltline Education Center, Room 406D

Event Description: A showcase of spoken word and poetry pieces highlighting the key players of black history. Enjoy refreshments and conversation on how everyone can be an ally in advocating for change. Students of the Beltline Education Center will also receive a free copy of the book: Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi with discussion during select Beltline Education Center courses.
