Bilingual Nurse Aide I

Would you like to learn about patient care and take the first step toward a health care career? This course prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the aging process, including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly; patient's rights; nutrition management; elimination procedures; safe environment; restorative services; personal and special care procedures and activities; human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders; communication and documentation; death and dying; and roles of the nurse aide and health team members.

A skill competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill competency evaluation administered by Credentia, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

Registration instructions:
Prior to registration, students should read the Nurse Aide I Syllabus webpage (https://www.waketech.edu/programs-courses/non-credit/workforce-training/healthcare-wellness/nurse-aide/1/syllabus).
Before the first day of class, students must pay $119 (in addition to class tuition) for the medical documentation manager through CastleBranch (https://portal.castlebranch.com/WL15).
Before the first day of class, students should have undergone the criminal background check and drug screen by CastleBranch.
Students should begin obtaining all mandatory paperwork/immunizations noted by CastleBranch. Failure to have all mandatory paperwork completed by the due date noted in the class schedule will result in dismissal from the program without the ability of a refund.

NOTE: This is a one-time cost of $119. This site will house all of the mandatory paperwork/immunizations, etc., submitted by you. These immunizations can be updated annually.

Please note that, if the class attends WakeMed or Duke hospital for clinicals, an additional cost may be needed for the clinical site's "Rotation Manager."

The Nursing Division Advisory Committee meets regularly for discussion regarding the Nurse Aide program needs.

Module H - Describe the structure, function, changes, common disorders and the role of the nurse aide related to the integumentary, musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, endocrine and immune systems.

Module I - Describe the principles of body mechanics that help prevent injury

Module J - Describe nutritional and hydration requirements of the older adult

Module K - Identify safety interventions that the nurse aide can do to create an environment for restraint elimination or reduction, as well as the proper use of restraints and the negative effects of restraint use

Module L - Identify effective communication with members of the health care team by reporting and recording information correctly

Module M - Identify the role of the nurse aide in each step of the nursing process

Module N - Describe events that might occur in a health care facility that would require an incident report and list the information to be included on the report

Module O - Describe the importance of a nurse aide's ability to think critically while performing resident care

Module P - Describe the importance of family and family support to the resident

Module Q - Describe the characteristics of a facility incorporating person-centered care

Module R - Identify cognitive changes that occur due to aging

Online orientation as evidenced by reading and understanding the program syllabus, specifically information regarding mandatory requirements prior to attending clinical.

Learning Supplies Needed

- Laptop or tablet for the online portion of the program
- Navy blue scrubs (*clinical)
- Black, closed-toe, closed-heel, non-canvas shoes (*clinical)
- A watch with a second hand (*clinical)
- Blood pressure cuff/stethoscope (optional for practice at home)

Requirements for Successful Completion

90% attendance
Lecture (for blended classes, homework takes the place of attendance), tests, lab and skills proficiency, final written and skills exam and mock competency day in preparation of the state NA I exam,Health care provider CPR,Physical and health immunizations,Student identification: Driver's license and student ID. After successful completion of the course, students must show a valid government-issued photo ID and non-laminated Social Security card to sit for the NNAAP exam.,Clinical site requirements: Health screening, immunizations (example: influenza vaccine), criminal background and drug screen requirements, which must be met prior to attending the clinical portion of the program. Certain immunizations require prompt attention due to the clinical deadline. (Example: Tuberculosis, or TB, screening has four ways a student can obtain this immunization. One of these includes a two-step TB test that can be administered only one week apart.) Failure to complete these immunization requirements could result in dismissal from the program.

Intended Audience

The course is intended for bilingual Spanish-speaking candidates interested in the health care field and seeking certification as a nursing assistant. Participants must understand and speak English.
