HM Mission Specific Decon

This course is designed to cover mission specific responsibilities to a hazardous materials incident that include additional competencies in the areas of Mass and Technical Decontamination. This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of OSHA 1910.120 and NFPA 1072: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications (2017 edition). This course should be offered consistent with the most current NC Fire and Rescue Commission guidelines; contact the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for details. Effective date July 1, 2020/NFPA 1072 Standard, 2017 edition.

Course Objectives

Chapter 9
• Identify and describe the types of decontamination.
• Describe the purpose of technical decontamination.
• Describe the methods of technical decontamination.
• Describe the process of technical decontamination.
• Demonstrate the ability to set up and implement technical decontamination operations in support of entry operations.

Chapter 10
• Explain the advantages and limitations of mass decontamination operations.
• Describe how to evaluate the effectiveness of mass decontamination.
• Describe the reference sources available for responders charged with performing mass decontamination.
• Describe methods for crowd control.
• Describe how to preserve evidence during mass decontamination.
• Describe the importance of completing reports and documentation of mass decontamination operations.
• Set up and perform mass decontamination on ambulatory victims.
• Set up and perform mass decontamination on nonambulatory victims.

Requirements for Successful Completion

90% attendance
Students shall successfully complete all practicum assessments with a minimum score of 70 prior to attempting any written test.,Students shall successfully score at or above 70 on all written test(s) for the course.
