Foundations for Reality-Based Instruction

This course introduces reality-based instruction as an adult learning strategy for training police personnel. Participants will learn instructional tools and methodologies to support reality-based training. They will also learn evaluation principles to help with needs assessments - for individuals, groups, and organizations - to justify program designs.

Course Objectives

Articulate how reality-based training can effectively serve as an instructional strategy for law enforcement training.

Identify several landmark cases that speak directly to training and risk management.

Explain how an effective and safe reality-based training program can be utilized to manage risk liability.

Articulate how reality-based training fits within an adult learning model.

Differentiate between training, coaching and testing.

Describe various training tools utilized within a reality-based training environment.

Differentiate between Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 scenarios.

Describe how immediate feedback and proper documentation are utilized as a function of performance management.

Design, develop and implement a Stage 2 scenario utilizing proper coaching techniques that require immediate feedback and proper documentation as a capstone event for successful course completion.


Outline of instruction

Day 1

1. How reality-based training can effectively serve as an instructional strategy for law enforcement training.
2. Landmark cases that speak directly to training and risk management.
3. How an effective and safe reality-based training program can be utilized to manage risk liability.
4. How reality-based training fits within an adult learning model.
5. Training, coaching, and testing.
6. Training tools utilized within a reality-based training environment.
7. Safety considerations in utilizing a reality-based training strategy.

Day 2

1. Elements for building effective scenarios.
2. Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 scenarios
3. Design and deliver Stage 1 and Stage 2 scenarios.
4. How immediate feedback and proper documentation are utilized as a function of performance management.
5. Design, develop, and implement Stage 2 scenarios utilizing proper coaching techniques that require immediate feedback and proper documentation as a capstone event for successful course completion.
