Dr. Stephen C. Scott is the third president in Wake Tech’s history. His personal focus is on continuous improvement through a process called Applied Benchmarking.
It’s already shaping up to be a great year for Wake Tech! We’ve just been named the 3rd fastest-growing large community college in the nation by Community College Week. How is this possible at a time when community colleges across the country are seeing their numbers decline? From my perspective, the reason is clear. We’re fortunate to be in a dynamic region that welcomes dozens of new residents each day. And we take very seriously our responsibility to provide for those residents, with relevant education and workforce training. We produce skilled, highly-qualified graduates who are ready to take their places in all kinds of fields, in business, industry, and higher education.
The fact is, more and more people are discovering the quality and value we offer. We’re now serving more than 70,000 students in our Curriculum and Workforce Continuing Education programs; that’s the equivalent of 1 in 8 Wake County adults!
It’s no surprise that enrollment for spring semester is at an all-time high! What an exciting way to start a new year, with new students, fresh ideas, new programs getting underway, and new pathways to be explored.
A Holiday Greeting
The holiday season is a special time for all of us – a time to rejoice and share special moments with family and friends that will become treasured memories. It’s no different here at Wake Tech – the past year has been filled with memorable moments. In 2015, our students, faculty, and staff continued to strengthen our bond with the community around us. We celebrated high marks and reaccreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the opening of the Beltline Education Center, record enrollment, and as always, the excitement of new graduates walking across the stage to receive their diplomas.
We’re fortunate to be here at Wake Tech – sharing new ideas in a collaborative spirit, discovering opportunities to learn and grow, celebrating student successes and faculty and staff achievements, and enjoying the rewards of meaningful work as part of this vibrant community. I’d like to take this occasion to thank you for supporting Wake Tech’s mission. We look forward to 2016 and the many new opportunities that lie ahead.
Celebrating National Career Development Month
Fall is one of my favorite seasons. It’s a time of change as warm days begin to cool off and magnificent color is on display across our campuses. By now, students have settled into their classes as we head towards the home stretch of the semester. For some, graduation is near and the excitement is building as the thought of landing the perfect career is within reach.
That’s why I’m glad our students have our Career and Employment Resources (CER) professionals on their side. November is National Career Development Month, and CER will present activities, events, and opportunities for career exploration and development. Special sessions will include panel discussions, leadership training, book displays, a veterans’ forum, and a poster and poetry contest. These events will help to bring classroom learning full circle and ready students for the future.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for our students to fine-tune the skills they’re learning in the classroom to assist them in finding the right career. I’m ready to celebrate our students and I’m excited to see their growth during National Career Development Month.
