Student Leader Honored For Community Service

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 10, 2016) - Asia King, a second-year Business Management student at Wake Tech, has been recognized for leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of 36 public and private colleges and universities committed to community engagement. King has been given the network’s Community Impact Award, which honors one student leader at each member school. She is the first Wake Tech student to receive the honor.

King is a campus leader, active in Wake Tech student government, Phi Beta Lambda, National Days of Service, and the Alternative Spring Break program – which she’s been chosen to help lead in 2016. She also volunteers at the Wilmington Street Men's Shelter and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

Mariel Steinbeiser, assistant coordinator in Wake Tech’s Office of Volunteerism and Leadership, praised King’s leadership during last year’s spring break trip, to Washington, D.C.: “Asia recruited students for the trip, worked out problems, and kept the group focused on the impact they could have.”

King is one of 21 North Carolina students chosen for the 2015 Community Impact Award. Honorees were recognized at Campus Compact’s annual student conference, held at UNC-Pembroke on November 7. Students and staff from more than 20 campuses attended for training in cultural competency, community engagement, and the “sustained dialogue” leadership process. More than 200 students have received the Community Impact Award since its inception in 2006.

Campus Compact is a national organization that builds the capacity of colleges and universities to produce civic-minded graduates and strengthen communities. North Carolina Campus Compact, our statewide affiliate, began in 2002 and is hosted by Elon University. Wake Tech joined in 2009.
