High School Students Get a Taste of the Culinary Arts

RALEIGH, N.C. (September 16, 2024) – Students from Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School visited Wake Tech Monday to learn about culinary arts.

Eighteen students in the high school CTE Culinary Arts II class got a behind-the-scenes look at the college's culinary and baking classes taking place in the kitchens on the Southern Wake Campus. They also toured the food storage area, as well as the walk-in refrigerators and freezers. Program Director Chef Aaron Stumb talked to the students about Wake Tech's programs and what it's like to work as a chef. Several students said they liked what they heard.

"I really liked seeing what they do in the kitchen," said sophomore Miahna Caldwell. She's eyeing the possibility of becoming a chef someday or owning her own restaurant.

Junior Madisun Elliot is already making plans to attend Wake Tech after graduation. "I always knew I liked this career field," she said. "This visit has opened my eyes even more."

After the tour, students and teachers were treated to a special lunch in Flavors, the college's student-run restaurant. The three-course meal was prepared and served by students. Wake Tech offers degrees in Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts and Hospitality Management. To learn more, visit culinary.waketech.edu.
