The nine-day Study Abroad program will cover Western music, and students will receive course credit for MUS-110: Music Appreciation.

Students will attend six performances and concerts and visit Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Academy of Music. They also will explore well-known sites in London, such as St. Paul's Cathedral, the Globe Theatre and the British Library, and take a tour of the city on an iconic double-decker bus.

Dates: May 28 - June 5

Faculty: The course will be led and taught by Wake Tech faculty member Dr. Katharine Boyes Gilleland.

Accommodations: Students will stay at a hotel in London (two to six per room).

Meals: The hotel provides a continental breakfast every morning. Daily low-cost meal options will be available in area markets and restaurants.

Cost: $4,100 (subject to change), but Study Abroad scholarships are available.

The cost includes the following:

• Direct, round-trip flights between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and London. Travel is booked through Wake Tech's travel agency liaison, and arrangements made by the course leader.
• A seven-night stay at a comfortable hotel with ensuite bathroom and breakfast daily
• Ground transportation for site visits and sightseeing tours
• Afternoon tea on the final day
• Tips and gratuities

The following items are not included in the cost:

• Wake Tech course fees and tuition ($240)
• Mandatory Wake Tech international health insurance through GeoBlue ($12)

Daily itinerary

• May 28 (Day 1) – Depart RDU on an overnight flight to London
   
• May 29 (Day 2) – Introduction to London
  Once checked in at the hotel, students take a walking tour to become oriented with the surrounding neighborhood, including the public transportation system and nearby pharmacies and markets. A safety briefing instructs them on steps to take in an emergency. Students then board a bus for a sightseeing tour of London, and the day ends with a jazz concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
   
• May 30 (Day 3) – Musical Neighborhoods Walking Tour
  Students visit the Covent Garden, Kensington and Marylebone neighborhoods and experience musical genres from opera to rock to classical. They also learn about broadcasting in the U.K. and the evolution of music videos and visit a science museum. The afternoon includes a visit to the British Library, one of the largest in the world.
   
• May 31 (Day 4) – Royal Academy of Music
  Students spend the morning exploring the Royal Academy's collections of musical instruments, scores, performance materials, memorabilia and other items. After lunch at Regent's Park, students experience "Music for Trees," an app that plays music by Royal Academy students that interprets different characteristics of trees in the park. The day ends with either an open-air concert at Regent's Park or a performance at the Royal Academy.
   
• June 1 (Day 5) – Globe Theatre and St. Paul's Cathedral
  Students explore the historic Globe Theatre, where some of William Shakespeare's plays were staged, and St. Paul's Cathedral, one of London's most famous buildings. The day ends with a concert at the Barbican Centre, among the largest performing arts centers in Europe.
   
• June 2 (Day 6) – Rock 'n' Roll Walking Tour
  Students visit sites made famous by musicians from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie to The Clash and Oasis. Following a lunch break at Covent Garden Market, students tour the Royal Opera House and attend a performance there, if the schedule allows.
   
• June 3 (Day 7) – Royal Albert Hall
  Students get a backstage tour of the auditorium that has featured personalities from Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran to Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein. In the afternoon, students get another backstage tour, this time at the historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane. They also visit the Leicester Square entertainment district and attend an evening performance.
   
• June 4 (Day 8) – Handel and Hendrix
  Students visit the Handel & Hendrix Museum, exploring the Baroque music of composer George Frederic Handel and the rock music of guitarist Jimi Hendrix, who lived on the same London street centuries apart. Students have a free afternoon to explore London before a later afternoon tea and a final concert at Royal Festival Hall to close the program.
   
• June 5 (Day 9) – Depart London on a same-day flight to Raleigh
