Wake Tech Hosts Regional Math Test

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 17, 2016) - Middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 25th annual Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Main Campus, included 290 students from Wake, Orange, Durham, Lee, Sampson and Franklin counties.

Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they’ve completed: Levels I, II, and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who’ve had more than three years of math. Top honors went to:

• Eric Jun, Carnage Middle School, Level I
• Jungbin Moon, Davis Drive Middle School, Level II
• Ben Wu, Carnage Middle School, Level III
• Emily Ryu, Green Hope High School, Comprehensive

WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present the awards. The top performers – 12 from levels I, II, and III and 13 from Comprehensive – move on to state finals competitions in their categories.

Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
