RALEIGH, N.C. (October 16, 2025) – Wake Tech celebrated its 28 newest members of Sigma Kappa Delta, the national honor society for English and literature excellence at two-year colleges, during an induction ceremony at Scott Northern Wake Campus.

In addition to the induction, the ceremony featured remarks from Elena Fleggas, associate professor of English; Savanna Herman, Sigma Kappa Delta chapter president; and Mae Malhoit, Sigma Kappa Delta member.

"This organization consistently offers fresh volunteer opportunities, sharing of ideas and the opportunity to exhibit literary creations," Herman told the inductees. "Due to SKD and the Wake Tech community, I learned that success is not linear, and you can achieve things that were previously thought to be impossible by using resources and interacting with community."

Sigma Kappa Delta connects students who enjoy and have a passion for English and literature and offers them opportunities to participate in rewarding activities and service projects and be recognized for their accomplishments. Criteria for membership include completion of a minimum of one English language or literature course, completion of 12 hours of college course work, a grade of B or higher in English and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

Over the past few years, Sigma Kappa Delta members tutored students at East Cary Middle School, organized food drives and created holiday cards for seniors. Club officers have also attended Sigma Tau Delta international conferences in Denver and St. Louis and networked with authors, students and faculty from other chapters across the United States. Sigma Tau Delta is Sigma Kappa Delta's parent organization.

Founded in 1996, Sigma Kappa Delta has more than 140 active chapters in the United States ,with approximately 2,500 members inducted annually.
