Employer Responsibilities

Wake Tech and the cooperating employer agree to observe placement procedures and employment practices which conform to all state, federal, and local laws as well as Wake Tech policy. 


Scheduling and Coordination  

Work assignments are scheduled to meet students’ academic needs as well as employers’ needs and requirements. The Work-Based Learning program is designed to be flexible to accommodate student and employer schedules. Students will be given work assignments that relate to their fields of study, interests, and abilities; and that provide skill development and opportunities for career exploration as they are completed.  

Students are assigned a supervisor in the field to work with them throughout the semester. Most students work and study concurrently.


Selection, Length of Appointment, and Evaluation     

Employers who are interested in posting opportunities for students must first create an employer account in College Central Network. Once the employer account is approved, the employer will be able to post, edit, and remove jobs/positions from CCN as it suits the organization's needs.

Students will submit resumes to companies and agencies of interest. Employers are responsible for screening applicants, arranging interviews, and offering their position(s) to the students who can best fulfill the job requirements. Students will then decide whether to accept positions.

Students complete either a one-credit-hour or a two-credit-hour Work-Based Learning assignment that starts at the beginning of every semester – August, January, and May.

For a one-credit-hour work experience, the student must work 160 hours in the semester (approximately 10 hours per week over 16 weeks). For a two-credit-hour experience, the student must work 320 hours in the semester (approximately 20 hours per week over 16 weeks). A few programs offer three-credit-hour options.

Employers will be asked to complete a mid-term site visit report to provide an evaluation of the Work-Based Learning Student's performance halfway through the academic semester. Employers will also be asked to complete a final evaluation of the Work-Based Learning student's performance at the conclusion of the semester.


Compensation and Benefits   

We do encourage employers to pay Work-Based Learning students. Employers determine the rate of pay according to their own established policies, the nature of assignments, quality of work, and background and education level of students. Employers should be aware that paid positions typically elicit a greater response from students.

Employers are not required to provide students with health insurance or other employee benefits. Employers will be asked to sign an agreement outlining their obligations to student hires, including providing Workers’ Compensation coverage.

Termination of Student Intern    

While we strive to ensure student-employer compatibility, Work-Based Learning arrangements occasionally do not work out for employers. In these cases, we assist employers in resolving the situation. If issues arise, employers should contact the student's faculty coordinator or the Work-Based Learning Office immediately.


Employer Agreement  

Wake Technical Community College and the cooperating employer agree to observe placement procedures and employment practices which conform to all state, federal, and local laws as well as Wake Tech policy (including nondiscrimination toward any participant or employee because of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, age, genetic profile, or any other legally-protected classification).  Participation in the Work-Based Learning Program at Wake Tech is based on the Work-Based Learning Agreement/Employment Sheet.
