Intended Audience
Plumbers, pipefitters and welders involved in installation of piping systems
Description
This course introduces the principles and practices of welding, with an emphasis on welding processes and hazards such as extreme temperatures, burn hazards, dust, and noise. Course content will be specific to SMAW (stick) welding with the potential to progress to GTAW (TIG) welding. Students will cover welding safety, care and use of tools and equipment, oxy-fuel safety and equipment, base metal preparation, and joint designs. Students will complete a welding project and be able to take industry-specific certification exams. Students can expect to find employment in construction or manufacturing environments.
Course Objectives
  1. learn safety procedures related to the use of SMAW and GTAW welding and oxy-fuel cutting equipment
  2. learn the types of welding and cutting equipment, as well as their care and use
  3. be trained in base metal preparation and joint designs used in welding

Certification Learning Outcomes/Requirements
  1. Students who successfully complete the class will receive the UA-100 Certification in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  2. Students who successfully complete the class will also have the opportunity to receive the UA-21 Certification in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Prerequisites
The candidate is required to pass an eye examination, with or without corrective lenses, to prove:
- Near-distance acuity such that the applicant is capable of reading a minimum of Jaeger Number 1 or equivalent type and size letters at a distance of not less than 12
inches on a standard Jaeger test chart.
- Reasonably measured gross stereopsis (depth perception)

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course
  1. Attendance 90% or above
  2. Participation
  3. Successful completion of written tests with a minimum grade of 70%.
  4. Successful completion of hands on demonstrations of skills, including x-ray analysis of welds.
