Description
Gain the knowledge necessary for the field of healthcare documentation, or for entering of medical information into electronic record systems. This program explains the fundamentals of the career, including extensive training in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, electronic health records, medico-legal rules and regulations, and HIPAA. The skills and knowledge of a healthcare documentation specialist or medical scribe may be applied in an ambulatory care clinic, surgical center, hospital setting, emergency department and other healthcare environments.
Course Objectives
  1. Understand the history of medical scribing and the difference between traditional scribes and AHP scribes.
  2. Understand the intrinsic value of an AHP scribe to a provider and the healthcare team, including the role, responsibilities, etiquette and personality of a functioning and successful AHP scribe.
  3. Understand the required elements and mechanics of an EHR chart to meet coding/billing/reimbursement guidelines.
  4. Comprehend common and specialty diagnostic tests and procedures, including coding and reimbursement for same.
  5. Describe the functions of electronic health records.
  6. Explain the importance of clinical standards in the development of interoperable electronic health records.
  7. Effectively utilize information technology as it applies to electronic health records.
  8. Understand the components and mechanics of an EHR with regard to scribing utilizing hands-on practice and demonstrate competency in same.
  9. Understand CMS Core Measures and Meaningful Use as they apply to healthcare documentation.
