Intended Audience
This course is open to anyone interested in learning about the business of music and entrepreneurship. It is particularly well-suited for musicians, music industry professionals, and entrepreneurs, Current and prospective Wake Tech students are encouraged to participate. Will also connect to the Wake Tech Idol Program.
Description
This 10-week course will explore the business of music, including an overview of the music industry along with business models and planning, marketing and promotion, copyrights and licensing, music production and engineering, and entrepreneurship. Students will learn about a variety of ways to earn a living in music, from recording and performing to songwriting and publishing. They will also become knowledgeable about the legal and financial aspects of the music business, and the skills and resources required to start their own music business.
Course Objectives
  1. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
    • Understand the different ways to make a living in the music industry
    • Identify the different business models used in the music industry
    • Develop a marketing and promotion plan for their music
    • Understand the legal and financial aspects of the music business
    • Write a business plan for their music business
    • Pitch their music to labels and publishers
    • Develop a portfolio of their music
