Intended Audience
This course is intended for anyone interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician and preparing for the certification exam.
Description
The Pharmacy Technician course is the first course in a two-part program that prepares students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification exam (PTCE). This course is designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to aid in the successful daily operation of a pharmacy. Course modules will emphasize pharmacy job roles and responsibilities, keyboarding accuracy and skills, knowledge of computer hardware and software, communication skills, customer service techniques, payment processing, familiarity with various forms of insurance plans, producing audit logs, and pharmacy law, regulations, and standards. Please note that the Pharmacy Technician Part I course is a non-degree, non-credit Continuing Education course that provides career training and the first step in preparation for an industry-related certification.
Course Objectives
  1. Describe and differentiate between prescription insurance plans, including Medicaid, Medicare Part D, and Workers’ Compensation.
  2. Differentiate between state and federal pharmacy laws.
  3. Identify the warning signs that may indicate someone is a victim of human trafficking.
  4. Explore the components of websites, webpages, and e-commerce.
  5. Properly spell, define, and pronounce medical terms associated with each of the major body systems.
  6. Distinguish between drugs of different classifications and their corresponding rules and regulations.
  7. Explain the rules of the metric system and the basic units of weight, volume, and length.
  8. Discuss the various roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians in community pharmacies.
  9. Explore CareerStep Community career resources.
  10. Review prescriptions, their uses, requirements, and components.
