Description
This course was developed to assist students in preparing for the outpatient, physician-based CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification examination administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The coder will need to know how to assign medical codes to patient services and diagnoses. This course is focused on providing the coder with coding practice, test taking strategies for the certification exam as well as review of anatomy, terminology, pathophysiology, reimbursement, and coding concepts.
Course Objectives
  1. Review the structure, function, terminology, pathophysiology and abbreviations of all body systems
  2. Apply appropriate coding conventions and guidelines; identify the correct process for selecting codes and analyze the types of coding errors to avoid
  3. Demonstrate coding ability by appropriately assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
  4. Demonstrate coding ability by appropriately assigning CPT ad HCPCS procedure codes
  5. Demonstrate coding ability by completing assigned practice exercises
  6. Write a personal plan for preparation for a certification examination

  1. Expertise in reviewing and assigning accurate medical codes for diagnoses, procedures and services performed by physicians and other qualified healthcare providers in the medical office or facility setting.
  2. Proficiency across a wide range of services, including evaluation and management, anesthesia, surgery, radiology, pathology and medicine.
  3. A sound knowledge of medical coding guidelines and regulations including compliance and reimbursement-allowing a CPC to better handle issues such as medical necessity, claims, denials bundling issues and charge capture.
  4. Understanding of how to integrate medical coding and payment policy changes into a practice's reimbursement processes.
  5. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology necessary to correctly code provider diagnosis and services.
