Description
This course, developed by NAEMT in partnership with the American Geriatrics Society, empowers EMS practitioners to improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients. The course provides the knowledge and skills required to address the unique challenges of older adults through case-based lectures, live-action video, hands-on skill stations, simulation, and small group scenarios. It includes assessment of older adults, skin and wound care, altered mental status, pharmacology and medication toxicity, medical devices, psycho-social emergencies, elder abuse, end-of-life care issues, disaster response considerations, and much more.
Course Objectives
  1. Discuss the aging patient and the social and physiological changes associated with the aging process.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of geriatric assessment and care using the GEMS Diamond.
  3. Demonstrate sensitivity with the communication challenges associated with the geriatric patient.
  4. Describe pharmacological concerns and discuss the issues of medication noncompliance and medication toxicity.
  5. Describe special considerations for a geriatric patient who has experienced trauma, including performing the patient assessment process on a geriatric patient with a traumatic injury.
  6. Describe the special considerations and emergency care strategies for a geriatric patient who is experiencing a medical emergency.
  7. Discuss end-of-life issues when caring for the elderly patient.
