Description
This course will focus on both the physiologic and psychosocial needs of the aging patient related to the provision of emergency care. Topics include polypharmacy, the pathophysiology of aging, illness & injury prevention, societal perceptions of the aged, elder abuse, and end-of-life care. Upon completion, students will gain a better understanding of the holistic process of aging.
Course Objectives
  1. Integrate assessment findings with principles of pathophysiology and knowledge of psychosocial needs to formulate a field impression and implement a comprehensive treatment and/or disposition plan for patients with a need for geriatric care.
  2. Understand, discuss, and demonstrate normal and abnormal physiologic processes associated with aging, pharmacokinetics, economic aspects of aging, polypharmacy, and age-related assessment and treatment modification for the major or common geriatric diseases or emergencies.
  3. Describe the epidemiology of the elderly population including incidence, morbidity, mortality, and as it pertains to risk factors and prevention of illness or injury.
  4. Discuss considerations for care of the aged including changes to medicine, societal perceptions, abuse, end of life care, the aged at home, and nursing home care.
