Intended Audience
This course is intended for those who would like to obtain the ESL Teaching Certificate at Wake Tech Community College.
Description
Experienced instructors know that effective and well-organized lesson plans are at the center of great teaching. This course has been designed for those new to teaching with extensive reading and analyzing of lesson plans at the beginning of the course. Additionally, this course shows students how to create their own original lesson plans for a language acquisition classroom, including writing measurable objectives, organizing practice activities, and planning for multi-level classrooms.
Course Objectives
  1. be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of what is meant by an "integrated and contextualized" lesson plan for an adult ESL class as evidenced by lesson plans completed for various course assignments.
  2. be able to create measurable learning objectives with appropriate supporting practice activities as evidenced by lesson plans completed for various course assignments.
  3. be able to explain the concepts of schema theory, error correction, learner-centeredness, and teacher-talk as evidenced by weekly quizzes taken during the class.
  4. be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of differentiated instruction in a multilevel classroom as evidenced by a lesson plan completed for a related assignment.

  2. Week 2: Objectives and Teacher Talk
  3. Week 3: Error Correction
  4. Week 4: Warm-Ups and Listening Skills
  5. Week 5: Developing a Reading Lesson Plan
  6. Week 6: Developing a Writing Plan
  7. Week 7: Classroom Management and Assessment
  8. Week 8: Differentiating Instruction
  9. Week 9: Vocabulary Instruction
  10. Week 10: Guided Tutoring Lab - Students will provide one hour of instruction to ESL students under the direct supervision of both the ESL instructor and the Certificate instructor.

  1. Attendance 90% or above
  2. Participation
  3. Homework is due at the beginning of each class and will be given a score of one to three points.
  4. Quizzes - There are three quizzes. Each is worth from zero to five points.
  5. Students must have a computed score of 85% or higher in order to pass this class.
