Intended Audience
This course is intended for those who would like to obtain the ESL Teaching Certificate at Wake Tech Community College.
Description
Language teaching methodology is the link between theory and practice. This course presents various approaches, methods, and techniques for teaching English as a Second Language. It provides students with the theoretical underpinning to determine how these approaches can be used in an adult ESL classroom. The course includes lectures and teaching practice in small groups.
Course Objectives
  1. demonstrate understanding of the theoretical concepts necessary for choosing teaching methodologies and designing/selecting corresponding instructional materials.
  2. discuss and analyze the major issues and controversies surrounding second language pedagogy and their implications for classroom instruction.
  3. demonstrate a working knowledge of major historical trends in language instruction including Direct Method, Grammar Translation, and Audio-Lingual.
  4. demonstrate a working knowledge of alternative approaches such as Desuggestopedia, Total Physical Response, and The Silent Way.
  5. demonstrate a working knowledge of current approaches such as Communicative Language Teaching, Content-Based Instruction, Task-Based Language Teaching, The Participatory Approach, Learning Strategies Training, Cooperative Learning, and Multiple Intelligences.
  6. demonstrate a working knowledge of combining the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) into one lesson plan.
  7. demonstrate a working knowledge of computer-aided language learning
