Intended Audience

This course is intended for anyone who is working or would like to start working as an ESL tutor, EFL instructor overseas, or an ESL instructor in the US. This course is a requirement for those seeking the ESL Teaching Certificate at Wake Tech Community College.

Description

English grammar can be a challenge – for both students seeking mastery and for instructors trying to explain rules and their exceptions. Whether you are tutoring, teaching overseas, or working in a community college, this course will give you the tools to become a successful and confident grammar instructor. Discover how to make lesson planning less tedious, and how to make grammar fun and engaging for your students!

Course Objectives

be able to describe advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to teaching English grammar to English language learners.
be able to research and analyze a grammar point and present this information to their classmates.
create a lesson plan that includes a contextualized grammar lesson.
demonstrate a knowledge of basic English grammar usage and terminology.

Outline of Instruction

Week 1: Approaches to Teaching Grammar to ELLs
Week 2: Basic English Grammar Usage and Terminology
Weeks 3 - 6: Specific Techniques for Teaching Grammar to ELLs.
Weeks 7 - 8: Contextualization of Grammar Lessons in Lesson Planning

Prerequisites

This course is designed to help students learn how to teach grammar. It is not designed to teach English grammar. Students are advised to brush up on their understanding of grammar rules and terminology prior to attending this class. We recommend the following website: www.EnglishPage.com.

Attendance 90% or above
Participation
Students will receive a syllabus on the first day of class which outlines all requirements for passing the course.
The final computed score for this course must be at least 85% in order to pass the course.
