Intended Audience
The course is intended for North Carolina Licensed Cosmetologists that are interested in teaching Cosmetology and seek to obtain a Cosmetology Instructor's license.
Description
This course provides cosmetology concepts along with instructional and supervisory skills for teaching in both classroom and lab settings. Topics include education theories, lesson and unit planning, lecture techniques, assessment tools, lab management, record keeping, skills demonstrations, and more. Upon completion, students should be able to develop lessons, assess student performance, demonstrate supervisory skills, and show competence in the areas covered on the Instructor Licensing Examination.
Course Objectives
  1. learn to instruct using all teaching styles for all types of learners of Cosmetology in a classroom and salon setting.
  2. project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
  3. practice proper grooming, poise, and effective communication skills.
  4. learn to relate to students of all backgrounds in a multicultural diverse environment and demonstrate mastery of teaching skills..
  5. understand employer/employee relationships and respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received.
  6. perform the basic skills necessary for teaching including writing lesson plans, performing lectures, and demonstrations, directing student projects, conducting theory class instruction, measuring student achievement, supervising clinic operations, and maintaining required student records.
  7. apply the theory, technical information, and related matter to assure sound judgements, decisions, and procedures.

Certification Learning Outcomes/Requirements
  1. At the end of training, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to register to take the Cosmetology Instructor's exam for licensure.

Prerequisites
Candidates must have a valid North Carolina Cosmetology license.
Students must attend a Teacher Trainee Instructor Information and Orientation Session.
Students must present either a copy of their High School Diploma, High School Equivalency (GED) or must have passed the Career Readiness Certificate tests with at least Bronze level.

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course
  1. Attendance 90% or above
  2. Participation
  3. Satisfactory completion of assignments and providing supervision of salon services with an average grade of 80.
