Intended Audience
Individuals who want digital literacy, employment-readiness, or want to successfully prepare for the relevant industry certification exam.
Description
Course participants with little to no experience using computers will learn the basics. Instruction will focus on learning concepts and navigating computers, devices, and the Internet. By the end of the course, students will have understood computing hardware and software principles, online fundamentals for communicating, collaborating, and socially engaging, and application essentials for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Participants will also be prepared to take the Microsoft Word certification test MO-100 (Word and Word 2019).
Course Objectives
  1. Keyboarding:
    • Identify keyboarding platforms
    • Assess typing speed
    • Discuss techniques to improve typing speed
    • Practice typing and using appropriate finger placement
  2. Computing Fundamentals:
    • Define basic concepts
    • Identify various device types
    • Manage desktop and cloud computing files, folders, and settings
    • Navigate operating systems
    • Review troubleshooting methods for basic computer problems
    • Recognize basic security threats
  3. Online Essentials:
    • Define commonly used Internet concepts
    • Navigate the web
    • Create, format, and manage email
    • Create, manage, and share calendars
    • Define, identify, and recall social media concepts and usages for business purposes
    • Identify appropriate communication methods in given situations,
    • Examine online collaboration tools
    • Define streaming concepts and recognize online conference technologies
    • Describe digital citizenship
    • Identify best practices for professional online identity management
  4. Application Essentials:
    • Define usages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database concepts
    • Recognize common application elements
