Anyone interested in learning how to groom their own pet or in a professional environment.
Description
Turn your love for animals into a successful pet grooming business! This course provides the basics of grooming as well as hands-on experience in professional retail pet care. You will work with dogs under the supervision of an experienced groomer and learn basic anatomy, coat and skin disorders, animal behavior, safe handling of animals, and grooming tools and techniques.
Course Objectives
  1. • Learn the basic steps to dog grooming and proper dog hygiene.
    • Learn basic anatomy of a dog, including proper movement of the joints that require moving an animal’s leg, tail, etc.
    • Know basic dog psychology, understand dog actions and behaviors.
    • Recognize the different breeds of dogs, their coats and recommended cuts.
    • Recognize any parasite infestations, and common skin diseases.
    • Know the common tools, danger zones and types of trims.
    • Maintain a safe work environment and learn how to communicate with pet parents.
    • Practice bathing, brushing and drying of dogs.
Outline of Instruction
  1. Intro to class, Canine anatomy: skeletal, body parts. Canine psychology, safe procedures.
  2. Common external and internal parasites. Preventing, identifying common infestations and skin diseases.
  3. Common grooming products used in a professional environment. Proper use of common tools, care of tools.
  4. Safety and sanitation, basic pet handling, structure of a mat.
  5. Different breeds of dogs, their coats and their recommended grooming. Types of trims for head, feet, body, ears and tails. Bathing and drying skills. Brushing and combing skills.
  6. Pre-assessment: nails, feet, ears, tail. Hair versus fur. Knowing the difference, how to groom.
  7. Review and Written Exam.
  8. Hands on Practice: bathing, brushing, drying: nails, ears and sanitary trim.
  9. Hands on Practice: bathing, brushing, drying: various trims and techniques.
  10. Hands on Practice: Reviewing any areas of additional need.
  11. Hands on Practice: Field Exam.
