Wake Tech Welcomes Men’s Basketball Team Home
March 25th, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 24, 2014) - Eagles pride! Wake Tech students, faculty, and staff filled the stands in the Main Campus gymnasium today to show the men’s basketball team how much their recent tournament triumphs mean for the college. If you missed the event, watch a short video here. The team made it all the way to the “final four” in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament last week in Illinois – and finished fourth in the nation!
The players thanked the fans for their support: “We could feel the love from Raleigh,” said Josh Mellette, a forward from Sanford. “Sorry we didn’t bring the championship home, but we did our best and we are really proud. Thank y’all so much!”
Wake Tech Athletics Director Barry Street praised the team’s efforts. “We went out there and lit the world on fire for a couple of days. We are really proud of these young men! ” Street added that this team’s accomplishments are especially outstanding for a basketball program that is only five years old. Talon, Wake Tech’s mascot, entertained the crowd and handed out t-shirts, and fans enjoyed free popcorn.
This is the first time in the program’s history that the men’s basketball team has played on the national stage. The Eagles earned a spot in the national tournament by winning the Region X title. Head Coach Joe Mitchell, received Region X Coach of the Year, and Josh Mellette was named Player of the Year. Region X serves the Carolinas and Virginia.
