Wake Tech Hosts Regional Math Contest
March 27th, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 27, 2014) - More than 300 middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 23rd annual Regional Math Contest hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Main Campus, included students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Harnett, Union, Lee, Cumberland, and Franklin counties.
They competed in three categories, and top honors went to:
• Jerry Zhuo, Carnage Middle School, in the Level I (Algebra I) category;
• Matthew Dai, Smith Middle School, in Level II (Geometry or Algebra II); and
• Raymond Gao, East Chapel Hill High School, in Comprehensive.
WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present awards. The top performers – seven from Level I, 16 from Level II, and 12 from Comprehensive – move on to state finals competitions in these categories.
Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
