Wake Tech Hosts 2nd Annual “Road Scholars 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run”
March 17th, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 15, 2014) - More than 300 runners and walkers converged on Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus this morning for the second annual Road Scholars 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run. Under bright sunny skies, ABC 11 news anchor Heather Waliga welcomed the crowd and kicked off the race. The top male finisher was Paul Mann of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His time was 18:31. The fastest woman was Courtney Pierce of Cary, with a time of 23:15. Awards were handed out in various age groups, as well as for teams. Runners from Wake Tech’s Dental Assisting program were dressed as the “tooth fairy” and won the award for the team with the best costume.
Before the race got started, Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott joined in a tribute to members of the men’s basketball team, who were there volunteering for the event. The team won the Region X championship and will play in the Division II national tournament next week. Assistant coach Frank Fields pledged the team would work hard to bring home the national title.
Proceeds from the Road Scholars support student scholarships at Wake Tech. Last year, more than $12,000 was raised. Geof Levine, Wake Tech's Media Productions Manager, produced a short video of the event.
