Wake Tech Begins Fall Semester with Record Enrollment
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 17, 2011) - A record number of students will flood Wake Tech's five campuses for the start of the Fall 2011 semester today. Registrations as of Tuesday, August 16 were 19,714 - above the 19,000 mark for the first time in college history. Despite budget cuts, Wake Tech has made several adjustments to prepare for the increased number of students, including the addition of more class sections, more online classes and an increase in class size where possible. Still, more than 5,500 students were on waiting lists for classes.
The college's first parking deck opens on Wake Tech's Health Sciences Campus, adjacent to WakeMed in Raleigh. The $9 million dollar, five-story deck has 510 parking spaces, and was paid for with funds from the 2007 bond referendum. The new deck means students will no longer have to park at Adult Education Center and be shuttled to the Health Sciences Campus. A 100,000 square foot instructional building is under construction at the Health Sciences Campus and will open next year.
The college's first athletic facility opens on Main Campus. The Physical Education Building includes a gym for home games for volleyball and basketball. It will also be used for Wake Tech commencement exercises.
New academic programs this fall include Mobile Content and Apps Development.
