RALEIGH, N.C.  (April 27, 2013)Wake Tech and Durham Tech students faced off today in an engineering design contest to solve an actual traffic problem. The challenge for students in the Bridge and Tunnel competition, held on Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus, was to design a way to get students safely across Highway 401 to Main Campus, from an apartment complex on the other side.

The competitors, students in Wake Tech’s Introduction to Engineering (EGR 150) course, worked in teams and were required to include cost, drainage, lighting, and materials considerations in their project designs. They were also required to submit written reports of their projects. Wake Tech students took first, second, and third place in the contest.

First Place:

  • Robert Goumaz
  • Aaron Starling
  • Dylan Yurko
  • Jonathan Hurtado

Second Place:

  • Mohamed Isoukrane
  • David Martin
  • Kyle Laverty
  • Jesse Lafuenti
  • Bader Qaraman

Third Place:

  • Scott Buechler
  • Hugo Portillo
  • Feroze Abbasi
  • Tran Tran
  • Duy Phuoc Bui

The Bridge and Tunnel competition is one of eight projects Wake Tech students enrolled in the Intro to Engineering course must complete. It includes all aspects of engineering: electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, and industrial. The students use the engineering design process to research and create their projects. They are working toward the Associate in Science degree (Pre-Major: Engineering) and plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to continue their studies.

The annual Engineering Competition is sponsored by Mulkey Engineers and Consultants, which contributed $25,000 over five years, as part of The Ripple Effect major gifts campaign.
