Wake Tech Hosts Regional Math Contest
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 24, 2011) - Three-hundred fifty local middle and high school math students put their skills to the test at Wake Tech's Main Campus today. The Mathematics and Physics Department hosted the annual Regional Math Contest. Students from Wake County, Durham, Chapel Hill, Granville County and Harnett County competed in four categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Comprehensive.
Four students earned top honors:
- Algebra I: Angela Deng, Carnage Middle School
- Geometry: Cindy Chen, Ligon Middle School
- Algebra II: Evan Liang, Ligon Middle School
- Comprehensive: Calvin Deng, Enloe High School
The top eight performers in Algebra I and Geometry, the top ten performers in Algebra II and the top eleven performers in Comprehensive move on to the State Finals where they will compete in the same categories. WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present the awards.
Wake Tech is one of sixteen regional test sites. Students who excel at each site are invited to participate in the State Contest which is held in each region in April. The State Mathematics Contest was initiated in 1979 under the sponsorship of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
This is the 20th year Wake Tech has hosted the event.
