RALEIGH, N.C. (March 22, 2012) - Three-hundred local middle and high school math students put their skills to the test at Wake Tech’s Main Campus today. The Mathematics and Physics Department hosted the annual Regional Math Contest. Students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Forsyth and Davidson Counties competed in four categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Comprehensive.
Four students earned top honors:
• Algebra I: Nikhil Reddy, Carnage Middle School
• Geometry: Angela Deng, Carnage Middle School
• Algebra II: Sarah Wu, Smith Middle School
• Comprehensive: Michael An, Green Hope High School
The top eight performers in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II and the top eleven performers in Comprehensive move on to the State Finals where they will compete in the same categories. WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present the awards.
Wake Tech is one of fifteen regional test sites. Students who excel at each site are invited to participate in the State Contest which is held in each region in April. The State Mathematics Contest was initiated in 1979 under the sponsorship of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
